Kawana Dental has been voted the best dentist on the Coast for the second year running.

The practice received a whopping number of votes in the Sunshine Coast Daily‘s 2020 Best Dentist competition, after Dr Leanne Paterson took the crown for them last year.

Brother-and-sister owners Mark and Georgia Maltby took over Kawana Dental from their father Dr Michael Maltby two years ago, who founded the practice in 1987.

“It’s a real local family business,” Dr Maltby said.

He said it was amazing to be recognised by the Coast two years in a row, and thanked Kawana Dental’s dedicated staff for providing top-notch treatment and service.

“We just make a real point to make sure we’re looking after people,” Dr Maltby said.

“It’s not about making as much money as possible, it’s about looking after our patients and making them feel like family and friends.”

The practice was forced to almost shut up shop due to strict COVID-19 restrictions earlier this year, only being allowed to complete emergency dental work.

But Dr Maltby said they were almost back to normal, with extra precautions in place, after the “tough time”.

“We’re now playing catch-up with people who had to postpone their treatments,” he said. “We’re flat out.”

A SCOTTISH national voted the Sunshine Coast’s top dentist is “on a mission” to create a generation of people passionate about their oral health.

Dr Leanne Paterson at Kawana Dental received an outstanding number of votes in the Daily’s search for the Sunshine Coast’s best dentist.

The call-out was part of the Daily‘s Best of the Sunshine Coast series, which highlights businesses, foods and people across the region deserving recognition.

Ms Paterson said the win “made her year” and was “absolutely mind-blown” by the amount of support she had received.

“I’m so lucky. The team that we have here at Kawana Dental are just the best team in the world – I’m so blessed to be a part of it,” she said.

“And the patients that we have here are the best patients in the world. I’m so lucky to have them.

“I’m just so grateful for everyone for their support and love.”

Ms Paterson said her passion for dentistry stemmed from a love of working with people and in healthcare.

“People only go to the doctor when they’re sick. Whereas people come to their dentist twice a year and, in a way, you get to become a really small but nice part of that family’s life,” she said.

Ms Paterson, who grew up and was trained as a dentist in Scotland, travelled to Australia in 2013 and worked for the royal flying doctor’s service.

When she was travelling Queensland she “stumbled upon” the Sunshine Coast, which she immediately knew she wanted to call home.

“Why would you want to live anywhere else? This is paradise,” she said.

She’s now been on the Coast for five years and loves being a part of the Kawana Dental family.

Ms Paterson said her passion within the industry was with paediatrics and getting kids excited about their oral health.

“Most adults dislike the dentist and most cite childhood fears or bad experiences as their reason for that,” she said.

“I’m kind of on a mission to make sure that the kids of today don’t grow up with the same relationship with dentists that adults now have.

“If we can make them like us then they’ll turn into adults who will look after their oral health better, and they’ll be better attenders at the dentist.”

A trip to the dentist is fun when kids visit Ms Paterson, whose favourite Disney character is Elsa from Frozen.

Kawana Dental is located at Point Cartwright Dr at Buddina.
